What you get for the price
Most Butler County homes are fixed with sub-slab depressurization. The installer drills a suction hole through the basement floor, runs a sealed pipe to a fan, and vents the gas above the roofline. A small gauge on the pipe shows the system is pulling air. Many installers also seal the sump pit and large floor cracks as part of the job.
What can raise the price
- Crawl spaces. A dirt crawl space usually needs a sealed plastic membrane with suction under it, which adds labor and material.
- More than one foundation. Additions, a slab-on-grade family room, or a garage built on a separate slab can each need their own suction point.
- Soil under the slab. Tight clay or a slab without gravel underneath can need more suction points or a stronger fan.
- Pipe route. Running the pipe up through a garage, closet or attic looks cleaner but usually costs more than an outside run.
- Finished basements. Drywall, flooring and drop ceilings make it harder to place the suction point and route the pipe.
Costs after it's installed
- Electricity. The fan runs all the time, so expect a small addition to your electric bill.
- Retesting. DEP recommends retesting every two years, even with a system. A short-term kit costs about $20 to $30.
- Fan replacement. Fans wear out eventually. Ask your installer what a replacement costs and what the warranty covers.
How to compare quotes
- Ask for the company's PA DEP certification number, and check it in the DEP directory.
- Get the price in writing, including where the pipe and fan will go.
- Ask whether a follow-up radon test is included after the system is running.
- Ask what the warranty covers: the fan, the radon level, or both.
- The fan should be outside the living space, such as in the attic, garage, or on an outside wall, not in the basement.

How much does radon mitigation cost in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania DEP puts a typical radon reduction system at $800 to $1,200. Crawl spaces, multiple foundations, or interior pipe routes can cost more.
Is it worth fixing a radon level just over 4.0?
The EPA action level is 4.0 pCi/L, and the EPA suggests considering a fix between 2 and 4 pCi/L. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., and a working system usually brings levels well down.
How long does installation take?
Most single-family homes are done in one day.
Do I have to use a certified installer?
Yes. Pennsylvania law requires anyone who installs radon mitigation systems for others to be certified by DEP.
